Capt. Fumio Nakahira of the Japanese Army was found at Mt. Halcon in the
Philippines in April of 1980, the last (so far) of a long run of
holdouts. One surrendered in 1974, 29 years after the end of the war,
with 500 rounds of ammo, his .25 caliber rifle, and "several" hand
grenades; and then only after his former commanding officer came in
person to order his surrender. He'd been conducting guerilla activities
as late as Oct. 19 1972 (when one of his fellow holdouts was shot by
police after burning local farmers rice). He also wrote a book about the
experience.
